The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has stressed the critical need for action on empowering women in Nigeria’s mining sector. APWEN President, Dr. Adebisi Osim, made this known during the sixth edition of the Nkechinyere Isigwe Annual Lecture in Abuja. The event, themed “Can Women Thrive in Mining? Breaking Barriers and Seizing Opportunities in the Extractive Industries,” focused on promoting gender inclusion in the male-dominated industry.
Challenges and Opportunities for Women in Mining
Dr. Osim highlighted the significant role women can play in the mining industry but noted the persistent challenges they face, such as gender stereotypes and limited access to necessary training.
“Despite the vast opportunities in the extractive industry, women continue to confront substantial barriers,” Osim stated. “Our mission is to dismantle these barriers and create pathways for women to participate fully in this sector.”
She further emphasized the need for actionable solutions: “By working together, we can ensure that gender becomes a source of strength and diversity, rather than a limitation.”
Collaborative Efforts for Inclusive Growth
The lecture featured a panel discussion centered on strategies to empower women in the mining sector. Dr. Osim called for collective efforts to foster an inclusive environment for women engineers and professionals:
“We need to explore strategies that create a supportive environment for women to thrive in the mining industry.”
The Role of Engineering in National Development
Representing the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Margaret Oguntala, was Kashim Ali, who highlighted the essential role of engineering in national progress.
“No nation has achieved significant advancement without the contributions of engineering,” Ali stated.
He also pointed out Nigeria’s untapped mineral resources, urging full engagement in the mining process:
“True participation in the mining sector requires not just financial gain but meaningful involvement across all aspects of the industry.”
Supporting Women Through Training and Resources
The discussants underscored the importance of comprehensive training and resources to ensure women can contribute effectively to the mining sector. They reiterated that ongoing support and skill development are key to empowering women in the extractive industries.
