FG to Conduct MSMEs Census in 2025 – Minister

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment (FMITI) has announced plans to conduct a nationwide census of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in 2025. This initiative is part of the ministry’s strategy to drive economic growth and industrial transformation.

The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, disclosed this in FMITI’s 2025 outlook document, which highlights the ministry’s priorities for the year. She emphasized the importance of the census, describing it as a crucial step toward creating a “precise, data-driven roadmap for empowering MSMEs.”

Economic Diversification and Industrial Growth

Dr. Oduwole underscored 2025 as a pivotal year for Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts, with a focus on measurable impacts through policy reforms and strategic initiatives.

“The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment is advancing Nigeria’s economic diversification by implementing targeted policies to accelerate industrialisation, digitisation, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation,” she stated.

She added that the ministry remains committed to:

  • Strengthening trade policy implementation.

  • Supporting businesses to thrive locally and globally.

“Our goal is to create wealth, productive jobs, and shared prosperity for all Nigerians,” Oduwole noted.

FMITI’s 2025 initiatives will center on three critical areas:

  1. Economic Diversification: Driving industrialisation and supporting key industries.

Additionally, FMITI will collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure exportable food products meet global safety standards.

Regional and Global Trade Initiatives

Dr. Oduwole highlighted the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), stating the ministry will prioritize preferential trade agreements with key nations to boost foreign exchange earnings.

Efforts will also focus on:

  • Retaining domestic investors.
  • Modernising Nigeria’s regulatory framework.
  • Establishing sub-national One-Stop Investment Centers.
  • Launching an investment portal to track and promote investment flows.

The minister assured stakeholders of FMITI’s transparency and commitment to collaboration, promising periodic performance updates verified by the Central Delivery Coordinating Unit.

Revitalising the Industrial Sector

The Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, outlined his vision for strengthening Nigeria’s industrial sector with a focus on competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability.

Key priorities include:

  • Expanding the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan to foster local manufacturing.
